Paul Day receives “Services to Industry” award

At the 2018 Motor Transport Awards Paul Day, Managing Director Turners (Soham) Ltd, received the most prestigious award of the evening for “Services for Industry”.

The Motor Transport Awards are recognised as the “Oscars” of the Transport industry with over 1400 industry leaders attending this year’s ceremony held at The Grosvenor House Hotel on July 4th. The winner of this prestigious award is voted for by the previous recipients who said: “Our panel of former winners said Day was ‘very unassuming’ and a ‘great character’ who had taken Turners from a ‘regional haulier into the big league’. Judges said Turners was the ‘leader in several niche but important markets, helping it remain highly profitable’ When Motor Transport profiled Paul Day in 2015 he was described as ‘one of the most respected operators in the transport industry, earning plaudits for his professionalism, strategic thinking and rigorous cost control’.

Shortly after receiving his award, Paul was interviewed by Rachel Riley of Countdown fame who posed a number of questions:

What has been the secret to your success? “It’s about having a good team with you, one person on his own can help a little bit but you have to have a whole team. I loved every minute of it and been involved in Turners for thirty four years and twenty six as Managing Director and everyday I’ve enjoyed it and it’s down to my team who have made every day fun for me” What has been your greatest achievement, if you had to pick just one? “In business its seeing the business continue to grow and to see my people continuing to grow” What makes Turners such a solid reputable name in the Industry? “We’ve always been focused on the basics, keep everything good for the customer, good cost control, do solid business year after year reinvest in the business and let it grow” This award is recognition for the work you’ve done so far but I’m sure there is still work you want to do so what is left? “I’m still young, I’m not retiring, I’m not going anywhere and I still love it so it’s onwards and upwards I hope” What challenges do you see facing the Industry ahead? I have to say every year it gets more difficult with the biggest challenges at the moment are the Driver and skills shortage but overall I think it’s still fun to be in the Industry I love every day. It’s a challenge but you have to take that challenge on” A tremendous achievement for Paul and as he states for his team of people over the many years Turners has been in business and for many years to come...
